The problem with living the chaotic lives necessary to keep ourselves afloat in these testing economical times is that it hinders our ability to think ahead. This hits in several ways, but none more so than figuring what in fuck's name you're going to do on the weekend to blow off steam. Hell, most of us can barely land on what we're having on dinner let alone in a position to assess what's happening 'round town.
Sometimes we just need to be told what to do, and the sooner you come to realise this, the sooner you'll start to have an appreciation for folks who engage in a bit of cheeky BDSM / domination (don't knock it until you've tried it).
So yeah, if you happen to live in Sydney and don't have plans on Friday / Saturday, then we strongly suggest you hit up the The Kraken Black Spiced Rum's 'Kraken Karnival'.
What, pray tell, is a Kraken Karnival?
Going down at The Vic in Marrickville, the Kraken Karnival is set to be a much-needed rejection of all those wanky pop-ups that keep, y’know, popping up. There won’t be any flashy displays or colourful lights given that it's a celebration of the historic 1817 battle of the Kraken and the Lighthouse.
They’ll be running some comps to test your skills and brawn to mark such a momentous occasion, but that’s only the beginning of the frivolities. How does an Espresso Martini garnished with white Persian fairy floss tickle your fancy? Yeah, that’s a thing.
There’s also a few other Kraken-infused cocktails available during the Karnival like the 'Kraken Squid Bite' (a rum and cider hybrid served warm).
The food offering is being sorted by exec chef of The Vic, Kirsten Baker, and sounds as equally as impressive as the dranks being served.
"Our buns are made from a food grade activated charcoal powder which is mixed with water, incorporated into the dough, and then baked in the oven by our mates at Fuel bakery," says Baker about the Kraken Hot Dog.
"The Kraken spiced rum is reduced slightly to create a thicker, sweeter mixture that we pour over the onions whilst they are BBQing on the grill. We cook the smoked sausage, place it into the bun and then top it with the Kraken infused onions."
There's also an octopus dish available (chargrilled octopus and chorizo served on top of kalamata olives, charcoal roasted peppers drizzled with a homemade basil oil and served with squid ink infused mayo), as well as some damn-fine sounding rum-marinated ribs.
If you're over the age of 18 and like errythang you're reading, register to get around the Kraken Karnival HERE. Tickets are free but space is limited, y'all.
